Crossing borders is a normal part of multi-country travel in Central Asia — especially if you’re exploring the iconic “Five Stans” (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan).Depending on your itinerary, you may cross borders by flight or by land, walking through official land checkpoints.
To help you feel confident and prepared, we’ve put together a clear, practical guide on how border crossings work in Central Asia and what you can expect at each step.

How the Border Crossing Process Works
Crossing borders in Central Asia typically includes three main stages: exiting one country, passing through a neutral zone, and entering the next.
A) Exiting a Country
When you leave any Central Asian nation, you will go through:
1. Customs Inspection
Your suitcase and personal belongings may be checked. Customs officers might ask simple questions or request to open your bag. This is completely normal.
2. Passport Control
You’ll present your passport, visa (if required), and any entry/exit cards you received on arrival.
3. Completion of Exit Formalities
Once cleared, you officially exit that country and proceed toward the neutral area between borders.
B) The “Green Zone” Between Borders
After completing exit procedures, you’ll arrive at a neutral strip of land that does not belong to either country. Travelers call it the Green Zone.
What to Expect
Length may vary: 200–500 meters, sometimes up to 1 km
You cannot walk through it
All travelers must take an official shuttle vehicle
Shuttle Transport
Cost: $1–2 USD per person
Paid directly in cash on the spot
This fee is charged by the border authorities, so it is not included in your tour package
Important:
Your guide or driver may escort you up to the exit border, but cannot accompany you through the Green Zone. You will cross this part independently. On the other side, your next guide or driver will be waiting for you.
C) Entering the Next Country
At the next border checkpoint, the process repeats:
1. Passport Control
You’ll present your travel documents for verification.
2. Customs Check
Your luggage may be scanned or inspected again.
3. Entry Formalities
Once completed, you are officially inside the new country.
4. Meet Your Local Guide
A representative of our company will meet you directly after the border to continue your journey.

How Long Do Border Crossings Take?
Timing depends heavily on the country and passenger flow:
Typical time: 20–40 minutes
Busy periods or stricter borders: up to 1 hour or more
Please be patient — waiting times depend on local authorities, and neither your guide nor the travel company can speed up the process.
Important Information All Travelers Must Know
To ensure a smooth experience, please follow these rules:
Always follow border officers’ instructions
Photography, filming, drones, or any professional equipment is prohibited near border areas
Keep calm, respectful, and patient — officers may ask about your trip or belongings
Store your passport, wallet, and valuables securely
Do not carry restricted items (varies by country): certain medications, alcohol limits, drones, walkie-talkies, etc.
